My ancestor Byron had been a member of the 8th NH Infantry from its formation and remained with the regiment when it converted to cavalry organization and was temporarily designated 2nd NH Cavalry. He served as a member of the 2nd NH Cav throughout the Red River campaign and continued to after it was restored to infantry organization.
